A two-year-old file on the rape of an eight-year-old child in Cork was closed yesterday by the Garda Siochana, reports Dick Hogan.

Chief Supt Adrian Culligan told a news conference yesterday that DNA testing of a Co Wicklow man who was killed in a construction site accident in Britain last month had confirmed that the principal suspect in the case was the rapist.

Chief Supt Culligan did not name the man because to do so might identify the young girl. The rape took place in the Gardiner's Hill area of Cork at about 6.30 p.m. on April 25th, 1998.
