The Garda Ombudsman is awaiting instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions in the case of a man who died while in custody at Store Street Garda station.

Hugh Brien (52) from Orchardstown Drive in Rathfarnham, Dublin, died on May 25th last year at the Mater hospital after he was found unresponsive in his cell at the station at 1.30am.

Mr Brien had been arrested and placed in custody five hours earlier under public order legislation.

Resuscitation attempts at the station failed and he was transferred to the Mater, where he was pronounced dead at 2.30am.

At Dublin Coroner’s Court yesterday, Carmel Foley, of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission, said a file had been submitted to the DPP on the matter and that final directions are expected shortly.

Coroner Dr Brian Farrell adjourned the matter for further mention on October 4th.
