UK: Britain's former home secretary, Mr David Blunkett, faces a critical 24 hours which will determine his political future.

Sir Alan Budd is expected to deliver his final verdict on the "nannygate" affair tomorrow.

Mr Blunkett could play a key role in Labour's election campaign if Sir Alan decides he acted in good faith. The MP would then be in line for a swift return to the Cabinet after the poll.

The conclusions will also impact on Prime Minister Tony Blair, who insisted Mr Blunkett will be cleared and has already been damaged by his departure, a new poll shows.

The Sheffield Brightside MP was said to be heartbroken as it emerged yesterday his former lover Ms Kimberly Quinn was also cheating on her husband with a political journalist.

Married father-of-two Mr Simon Hoggart, wine writer on the Spectator magazine that she publishes, initially denied the affair, suggesting it was a smear orchestrated by Mr Blunkett.

However, The Guardian columnist and BBC Radio 4 regular Mr Hoggart yesterday admitted to a "sexual relationship". He insisted, however, he could not be the father of her two-year-old child, which Mr Blunkett says is his son, or her unborn baby.

It was the MP's battle to see the boy that prompted Ms Quinn's allegations that he had abused his power to fast-track a visa for her Filipino nanny Ms Leoncia Casalme. Sir Alan has already concluded that the application was speeded up and the then home secretary's initial account of his involvement was wrong. The former Treasury official must now decide whether Mr Blunkett was genuinely mistaken and knew nothing about the fast-tracking.
