A TD since 1981, Mr Yates topped the poll at the last election, winning over 10,000 votes at the first count. His departure caused uncertainty over Fine Gael ability to retain both seats held in the Wexford constituency since 1987.

However party leader Mr Michael Noonan said today that Mr Kehoe was an excellent young candidate joining two other excellent candidates on the party ticket. "I am confident that the Fine Gael team will retain our two Dáil seats in Wexford."
