A businessman who pleaded guilty to being in possession of an antique revolver at Cork airport as he waited to board a flight to London was yesterday fined €1,500.

Gary Coyne (32), Woodville, Rochestown Road, Cork, was arrested by airport police on April 5th, 2004, after an X-ray machine detected a small revolver in his hand luggage. Mr Coyne explained to gardaí that the gun was an antique that had been in his family for over 30 years.

Cork District Court heard yesterday that Mr Coyne had been in the process of moving house at the time of the incident. He maintained he had taken the gun from the premises with the intention of depositing it in a safe at a pub he owned.

Judge O'Leary fined Mr Coyne €1,500 and bound him to the peace for two years.
