Fire breaks out at landmark Kildare hotel

A fire has broken out on the site of a landmark hotel in Co Kildare this evening.

Several calls were made to the fire brigade about a fire that occurred in the Clanard Court Hotel, formerly known as the Carlton Abbey Hotel, in the centre of Athy.

Firefighters are currently on the scene.

A spokesperson for the Dublin Fire Brigade said three pumps have gone out to tend to the fire.

“From what we understand there’s a lot of smoke but not much flames,” he said.

The hotel, which is a former Sisters of Mercy convent, was in the news last yearwhen it closed abruptly in January 2012. A property management company subsequently advertised five positions for people to live in the hotel as “live-in guardians”.
