Gardai in Coolock are satisfied there was no petrol-bomb attack at a house in Darndale, Dublin, early last Sunday. Neighbours said a fire was caused by a petrol bomb having been thrown through the rear window of the house and exploding in the kitchen, where a woman was preparing a bottle of milk for an infant. The incident was reported as a petrol bombing and was extensively featured on radio.
A forensic examination has determined that the cause was an aerosol can which was put in a microwave oven in the kitchen and which exploded when the oven was turned on.
Firefighters had removed the microwave from the kitchen and thrown it into the garden, so that its role in causing the fire was not immediately obvious. The woman is still in hospital, recovering from smoke inhalation and burns.
