Fire damages Co Kildare school

The Athy Model School in Co Kildare has been extensively damaged by a fire which started early this morning.

Emergency services were called to the blaze at the 150-year-old building on the Dublin road at 4am.

Gardaí said a house next to the school was evacuated and smoke from the fire affected visibility on the main Dublin road during rush hour.

According to a spokeswoman for the Department of Education, Co Kildare VEC is making accommodation available for the Model School in its new post primary school building in Athy.

It is planned this accommodation will be furnished and equipped to allow the school to reopen next Thursday.

The existing Model School site is in the process of being secured.
