A number of fire tenders from the Republic and Northern Ireland are at the scene of a fire that broke out on a farm straddling the Border at Hackballscross/Ballybinaby this afternoon.

It is understood the farm belongs to the alleged former IRA chief-of-staff Thomas 'Slab' Murphy.

The farm was the subject of a major cross-Border search operation last April, during which more than €1 million in cash and cheques was discovered by gardaí.

Gardaí and the PSNI were also at the scene of today's fire.

A spokesman for Dundalk Fire Service said the fire broke out in an outbuilding or workshop area on the farm at about noon.

"It spread from the workshop to a hayshed. It was not really serious," he said.

"There was a small explosion. It may have been caused by an acetylene cylinder. There were quite a number of tenders there from Northern Ireland initially but they weren't really needed."

About 12 firefighters and fire engines and water tenders from Dundalk and Ardee were also at the scene.

He said the fire would be investigated by whichever police force's jurisdiction it was found to fall into.

The fire is now substantially under control and is being "damped down", the spokesman added.

A Garda spokesman said he had no information about the incident.
