A CHEQUE for $25,000 (€17,500), part of an $89,000 donation promised by the parents of a newborn baby who passed away at the Cliffs of Moher in 2006, has been presented to the Mayor of Clare. It will fund the continued provision of first aid services and facilities at the world famous attraction.
Baby Nicolas died at birth while his parents Kelly Stokes and Delia Garcia-Stokes from Phoenix, Arizona, visited the cliffs in July 2006.
A first aid facility at the centre has been named “Nicolas’ Room” in memory of baby Nicolas.
A year after their loss, Kelly and Delia returned to Clare and pledged €62,000 for the provision of equipment for Nicolas’ Room.
The couple have raised $60,000 to date and the cheque handed over yesterday was the second instalment from their continuing fundraising efforts.
Over 200 visitors have received first aid and assistance at “Nicolas’ Room” since the Cliffs of Moher visitor centre was opened to the public in February 2007.
The 23 staff at the centre have received first aid training and the room is equipped to the level of a cardiac ambulance.
Mayor Tony Mulcahy accepted the contribution from councilman Claude Mattox of Phoenix City Council in Arizona.
