Washington - The Washington Times revealed yesterday a presidential first with an impeccable pedigree, Patrick Smyth writes. Along with Mr Bush, when he moves into the White House, will be Spot Fletcher Bush, a "feisty" springer spaniel which is the daughter of President George Bush's "first dog", Millie, and was even born in the White House.

Spot is named after a Texas Ranger baseball player, Scott Fletcher, and will share the honours as First Dog with an 11-weekold black Scottish terrier puppy, temporarily named J, which is a recent gift. The Bushes will also bring two cats with them.

This nation of dog-lovers was once advised by Harry S. Truman: "If you want a friend in Washington get a dog".
