The first solo crossing of the Atlantic in a kayak finished last night in Mayo.

Mr Peter Bray, a 43-year-old kayaker from England, arrived in the port of Porturlin at about 7 p.m. yesterday evening.

He had spent 75 days at sea in a 24-foot kayak, having begun his journey in St John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, on June 23rd.

Mr Bray was taken by Air Corps helicopter to Killybegs in Co Donegal where his relatives and friends were waiting to welcome him. He was described as being in good medical condition.

This was Mr Bray's second attempt at the solo transatlantic crossing. Last year a fault in his boat saw the vessel sink and his life raft founder, leaving him clinging to a fishing buoy for 31 hours.

Mr Bray is hoping to raise £100,000 for the Rainbow Children's Hospices in England through his record-breaking journey. The project team say this has almost been attained.
