The first Ugandan ordination to the diaconate of the Catholic Church in the 400-year history of the Order of St Camillus has taken place at the congregation's centre in Co Westmeath, writes PATSY McGARRY.

Rev Richard Lubaale was ordained deacon by Bishop of Meath Michael Smith at Killucan last weekend.

Rev Lubaale is a member of the congregation’s Anglo-Irish Province. It opened a mission in Uganda 10 years ago when Fr Tom O’Connor from Kerry and Fr Tom Smith from Cavan went there. Rev Richard will be ordained to the priesthood later this year in Uganda.

St Camillus is the patron saint of the sick and those who care for them.
