Paris - Algeria's outlawed Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) called on Islamists in a statement yesterday to express their anger over what it termed the Algerian authorities' responsibility for recent massacres.

The statement said: "The latest massacres in Algeria have lifted the veil on remaining doubts, for those who have them, concerning the responsibility of the Algerian military junta for these tragic killings whose victim is Algeria's Muslim people."

It was not possible to verify the authenticity of the statement which was sent in the names of Mr Ahmed Zaoui and Mr Mostepha Habes as members of the FIS ruling body, the Madjlis Echoura, in exile in Europe. The statement said that "faced with this unspeakable butchery. . . the Islamic Salvation Front invites the Islamic expatriate community in general and Algerian in particular, to show its indignation and disapproval throughout the world. . . against the genocide undertaken by the military junta. . .
