Some 1,000 people are protesting in Co Donegal today at the ban on landing certain fish at night.
Four national organisations are supporting the protest in Killybegs, Co Donegal, which aims to highlight the impact of the night-time restrictions on mackerel and herring catches.
The restrictions on landings of mackerel, horse mackerel and herring after midnight on weekdays and after 6 p.m. at weekends and public holidays will have a negative impact on fish processing at six ports, the organisations say.
It will also affect the quality of landings worth €80 million annually at first point of sale, according to the Killybegs Fishermen's Organisation, the Irish South and West Fish Producers' Organisation, the Irish Fish Producers' Organisation and the Irish Fish Processors' and Exporters' Association.
The Minister for Communications Marine and Natural Resources, Mr Dermot Ahern, said he was confident "any practical problems" can be resolved through dialogue "in a mutually satisfactory manner taking account of the new EU legal requirements".
