Air and sea rescue services were called out in the early hours of yesterday morning to the scene of a collision between two sea vessels south-east of the Co Wexford coast. Christine Newman reports.
Nobody was injured in the incident, which happened at 3.20 a.m. about 13 miles south-east of Rosslare Harbour, in the Tuskar Rock area.
The collision was between a fishing vessel, the Bara Seagal, and a cargo ship, the Sea Hope.
There were fears that the Bara Seagal could sink, as it was taking in water. The Kilmore Quay and Rosslare lifeboats were immediately alerted and went to the scene.
The Irish Coastguard helicopter also flew from Dublin to deliver pumping equipment.
The fishing vessel, with six crew on board, was towed to Rosslare Harbour, where it remained moored yesterday. None of the crew was injured.
The Sea Hope sailed on to Dublin Port, where it docked later in the morning.
A spokesman for the Marine Rescue Co-Ordination Centre said: "The Bara Seagal was taking in water all the time and there was a possibility of it sinking, but there were enough pumps and it reached Rosslare safely."
