Five people died when a private jet crashed while taking off from Birmingham International Airport.

An airport spokesman says three crew and two passengers were on board the Challenger jet.

An airport spokesman said the passengers were US businessmen flying home. "There are no known survivors," he said.

West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed that the eight ambulance crews which attended the incident have been stood down and that no-one has been taken to hospital in the wake of the crash.

Fire crews reached the blazing jet within one minute of the crash shortly after noon.

The plane was en route to Bangor, Maine, US, when it crashed.

The airport is expected to remain closed for some time and passengers expecting to fly from Birmingham today are urged to contact their airline.
