Five people died in road accidents over the weekend, according to the Garda.

Five people died in road accidents over the weekend, according to the Garda.

Three lost their lives on Friday. Mr Gerry McCabe (48), of Redcross, Co Wicklow, was killed on the N11, and Ms Ellen Murphy (86), from Clarecastle, Co Clare, died in an accident on the Mill Road in Ennis, Co Clare.

Also on Friday a motorcyclist was killed in Macroom, Co Cork. She was named as Ms Nuala Dennehy (29), from Midleton, Cork.

Gardaí in Lifford, Co Donegal, are investigating a fatal accident in the town, which happened at 9.20 a.m. on Saturday.

The male driver of a car was fatally injured as a result of a single-vehicle accident.

Gardaí in Macroom, Co Cork, are investigating another fatal accident on Saturday.

The single-vehicle incident occurred at 4.15 a.m. at Caherbirraane, Macroom, when the driver of a jeep struck some trees at the side of the road.

This brings the total number of deaths this year to 367.
