The death of a 19-year-old man in a car crash in the early hours of this morning brought to the total number of people killed on the roads this weekend to five in less than 24 hours.

Gardaí in Longford are investigating the crash at Battery Road in the town in which the 19-year-old, who was a back-seat passenger, died when the car he was in lost control and struck a pole.

There were seven people in the car of when it crashed at 12.30 am. Two others were seriously injured and are being treated at Mullingar Hospital.

Last night, a 40-year-old motor cyclist was killed when his bike was in collision with a car in Co Laois. Gardai in Portlaoise are investigating the crash near Mountrath at around 8 pm, in which Joseph Wisely, Rosenallis, Co Laois died.

He was taken from the scene to hospital but died shortly afterwards.

On Saturday afternoon, a woman who was back seat passenger died in a Newry hospital after a crash involving two cars at Carrickcarnan, Dromad, Co Louth. Two other people were injured and are also being treated at Daisy Hill.

The crash happened at around 1 pm and gardai in Dromad are investigating.

Earlier a man in 60s later named as Wilford Patterson from Coolboy, Milford, Donegal, was killed when he was struck by a car while walking at Kilmacrennan, Co Donegal. The incident happened at around 11.40 am.

The first of the five fatalities which occurred over 14-hour period, was that of 28-year-old Declan O' Sullivan from Riverview, Tramore, Co Waterford. He died when his motorcycle struck a wall at 8.20am at Moonvoy, Tramore.

Meanwhile, a man remained in a critical condition in hospital in Galway today after a crash involving two cars at Inverin at around 8.30pm last night. The accident took place on the main coast road from Galway to Carraroe last night.
