Five people have been killed in southern Australia when a train and small bus collided at a level crossing, local media have reported.

Channel 10 television reported five were killed and 13 injured on Thursday when the bus careered into "The Ghan" train, which was partly across the crossing in Adelaide.

The Ghan is one of Australia's major tourist trains and runs from Adelaide to the outback town of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.

A Great Southern Railway spokesman said details of the collision were scarce. "All we know at this point in relation to The Ghan is that our guests are okay," the spokesman told radio.
