Five people were killed and 18 injured when a Spanish bus veered off the road early today, officials said.

Five people were killed and 18 injured when a Spanish bus veered off the road early today, officials said.

Those killed included a Spanish man and woman, Moroccan father and son and 24-year-old North American woman, a spokesman for the local government said.

He could not confirm whether the North American victim was from the United States or Canada but corrected a spokesman who said earlier a man from the United States was killed.

The bus, which was travelling from Madrid to the southern coastalcity of Malaga, crashed in the central province of Ciudad Real, thespokesman said.

Spaniards, Moroccans, Britons and a Dutch youth numbered among the 30and 40 passengers aboard the bus, the local government said in astatement. Most were asleep when the bus crashed, it added.

Of the 18 injured, six remained in hospital but were not seriouslyinjured, the spokesman said.

State radio reported that heavy rains overnight caused theaccident.
