A Co Tipperary man and his grandson died in a head-on collision between a car and an articulated truck on the main Limerick to Cahir road yesterday. The accident happened 1 1/2 miles outside Tipperary Town at 12.15 p.m. The dead man was named as Mr Patrick Doocy (54), Toureen, Bansha, Co Tipperary, and his grandson, Ryan Smith, who lives in England and was on holiday. The boy's mother, a front-seat passenger in the car, was seriously injured. She was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital, where her injuries were described as "not life threatening".

Meanwhile, a man died and a number of gardai were injured in a two car crash in Co Monaghan last night. The accident happened on the main Dublin to Derry road at Broomfield, half way between Carrickmacross and Castleblayney. The dead man, a pensioner, is believed to be a local man. The other car was a Garda patrol car.

A Navan man, Mr Paul Bell (20), of Abbey Grove, died when a car in which he was a back-seat passenger struck a wall on the outskirts of the town. The driver of the car and four other passengers were all in a stable condition at Our Lady's Hospital, Navan.

An eight-year-old girl died yesterday after a traffic accident in Portlaoise. She was riding her bicycle on Hawthorn Drive at 4.50 p.m. when it collided with a refuse truck.
