Five people, including a four-year-old child, were killed in road accidents over the weekend.
The boy, who was from England, died last night after he was struck by a car when he ran onto the road from the house where he was staying near Listowel in Co Kerry.
He was taken by ambulance to Tralee General Hospital where he died within an hour. The accident occurred around 5.35 pm. The car was driven by a 19-year-old local, who was said to be in a state of shock last night.
The boy was one of four children in the family, and from Manchester. His family arrived on Friday last and were staying in a self-catering house around one mile outside Listowel for a week.
Shocked neighbours and gardai were looking after the three other children, the eldest of whom is 12 years old, while the boy's parents attended Tralee General Hospital last night.
The boy is the 38th pedestrian to be killed on the State's roads this year.
Earlier yesterday, a man was killed in an accident in Groomsport, Co Down. Only one car was involved and police in nearby Bangor have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
The man was the 100th person to be killed on Northern Ireland's roads this year.
Mr Nigel O'Neill (30), Athgarvan, Newbridge, Co Kildare, and Mr Mark Berry (40), Arcadia Court, Skerries, Co Dublin, were killed when their vehicles collided at Oberstown, Co Kildare, on the Naas by-pass section of the motorway early on Saturday morning.
An articulated lorry struck the cars shortly afterwards. The driver of the lorry received treatment for shock.
On Friday, Ms Nora May Jennings (73), Irishtown, Co Mayo, was killed in a car crash at Ballindine. Two other people were injured in the incident, which occurred at 12.40 p.m. on the N17 road.
More than 220 people have been killed in road accidents in the Republic so far this year.
