Five men have been refused bail after they appeared in court charged with robbing a supermarket in Kildare.
Myles Connors (35), Glenshane Lawns, Tallaght; William Connors (30), Carbury, Kildare; Thomas Kiely (19), Ballyowen Lane, Lucan; Daniel Connors (24), Sundale Park, Tallaght, and his brother Paddy Connors (27), Fonthill Road, Clondalkin, were before Dublin District Court charged with robbing Brendan Canavan of money and cigarettes at his Gala shop, Dun Brinn, Athy, on Thursday night.
The court heard that four of them made no reply after they were charged while Daniel Connors said: "Not a bother, thank you." Gardaí objected to bail because of the seriousness of the offence, the possibility of interference with witnesses and because they had allegedly tried to evade arrest.
Det Sgt Des McHale said it was alleged a number of people went into the shop with a sledgehammer and threatened the owner. They left with a considerable amount of money and changed the number plates on the car they were driving before trying to evade arrest by ramming two Garda cars.
Defence solicitor Jim Orange asked that bail be set and a daily signing-on at a Garda station could be imposed as part of any conditions.
Judge Hugh O'Donnell refused bail in every case and remanded them to appear in Cloverhill District Court on November 24th.
