Five men charged with membership of the Irish National Liberation Army were remanded in custody at the Special Criminal Court today.
The men, arrested by detectives who foiled a suspected a kidnap attempt at the weekend, are to appear again before the non-jury court in central Dublin on Friday.
Two of the men have addresses in the Republic — Gareth Dunne, 22, of Clonard Road, Crumlin, Dublin 12, and Gerard Kelleher, 26, of Cathedral View Walk, Kevin Street, Dublin 8.
Another two have addresses in Northern Ireland — Edward McGarrigle, 42, of Melmount Gardens, Strabane, Co Tyrone, and John McCrossan, 46, of Ballycolman Estate, Strabane, Co Tyrone.
A fifth man, Neil Myles, 53, gave no fixed address.
Lawyers told the court there would be applications for bail at the next hearing on Friday morning.
The five were among seven people arrested in Cork, Kerry and Limerick late on Friday night in a Garda operation to thwart the kidnapping of a businessman and his family.
Detectives believe an INLA gang were planning to extort money from the man, living in Montenotte, Cork city.
Two men were released without charge last night while a file is being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), and the other five were charged with membership of the INLA.
The three-judge Special Criminal Court heard that Dunne replied: "I'm not guilty" when charged, Kelleher made no reply and Myles said: "I'm not a member of the INLA."
When charged, McGarrigle replied: "I believe this is an unjust and unwarranted charge based on a Draconian law. I'm innocent of any charge which will be brought against me."
McCrossan made no reply when charged.
Michael Donovan, appearing for the DPP, said he would be objecting to bail in all cases.
