Rachael English is to leave RTÉ Radio 1's evening news programme Five Seven Live at the end of the summer, the station announced yesterday.

An RTÉ statement said Ms English, who has presented the programme for six years, would be pursuing "new opportunities" within RTÉ radio.

A spokeswoman declined to comment on who Ms English's replacement would be, but said an announcement would be made during the summer. No decision has yet been made, she added.

Commenting on her decision to leave the show, Ms English said she had "thoroughly enjoyed" presenting a "busy and exciting daily radio programme."

She added: "I feel the time has come to try something new. I will be working on several new projects for RTÉ radio over the coming year, which will be announced in due course, but this move won't take place until later in the summer."

John McMahon, current affairs editor with RTÉ, said the broadcaster would be sorry to see Ms English leave the programme, but was "very excited" about the new opportunities it would be exploring with her.
