GARDAI based in Galway and Roscommon continued to question five men yesterday about a fraudulent scheme involving stolen vehicles.

It is believed that parts and engines from stolen vehicles were put into cars that had been written off for insurance purposes and then sold on to unsuspecting motorists in Cos Galway, Roscommon and Westmeath.

The five men were arrested on Wednesday evening and detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. Three men were being questioned at Roscommon Garda station and two at Mill Street station in Galway after a coordinated search of a number of garages in the region.

A Garda spokesman in Roscommon said that while investigations were continuing, it was likely that the men would be released and a file sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
