Rome - With the level of the Po river sinking, Northern Italy's flooding emergency was clearly beginning to ease off yesterday, Paddy Agnew reports. Rescue workers remained on the alert as the flood waters from rain that fell mainly in the Alpine regions of Val d'Aosta and Piedmont last weekend continued their eastward journey to the Adriatic via the Po.
Experts said they did not expect the river to break its banks when the mass of the flood waters hit the Po Delta today. Twenty-five people have died and more than £1 billion worth of damage was done to agriculture and industry in the north-western regions worst hit by the flooding.
