"We are all deeply shocked by the events which occurred in America yesterday. As a mark of respect to those who died I am adjourning proceedings until tomorrow," said Justice Flood.
He asked all present to stand to observe a minute's silence for those who so tragically lost their lives.
The tribunal had been due to hear further evidence from builder Mr Joe McGowan. He will now appear at tomorrow's sitting.
An Oireachtas sub-committee investigating the £36 million cost overrun of a rail signalling project also adjourned this morning out of sympathy for those killed in yesterday's attack on the US.
The sub-committee's chairman, Mr Séan Doherty TD, said his thoughts were with the family and friends of all those killed, including the Irish woman Mrs Ruth Clifford McCourt (45) and her three-year-old daughter.
The sub-committee then stood in silence for one minute.
Evidence to the inquiry will resume at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
