There was widespread flash flooding in several areas of Derry yesterday afternoon following a three-hour downpour of rain.

Streets and roads close to the River Foyle were the worst affected, among them Strand Road, where the fire service was called to pump out flood water from the city's police headquarters, and Foyle Road where several houses had ground-floor flooding.

Low-lying areas such as Westland Street and Rossville Street in the Bogside were also affected. Lone Moore Road and Lecky Road were also under several inches of water as was Duncastle Road in Waterside. The lower deck of Craigavon Bridge was flooded and closed to traffic.

Shipquay Street, one of the steepest city centre streets in Europe, resembled a river with water gushing down and pouring into Guildhall Square.

Several cars were also abandoned by motorists along Victoria Road. A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Fire Service said it had been called out to dozens of different locations.

"It's mainly calls to people who have been trapped in their cars," he said. "You name it, the area has been flooded. There's also a lot of water gushing from several manholes along main traffic routes. It's just non-stop."

There was also flooding at the Foyle Arts Centre building at Lawrence Hill. The ground floor was damaged by water.
