Focus on maths paper adds to the Leaving Cert tension

Attention will focus on the performance of students in maths when the Leaving Cert results are published tomorrow

Attention will focus on the performance of students in maths when the Leaving Cert results are published tomorrow.  Last year, more than 4,500 students failed ordinary level maths and a further 5,000 sat foundation level maths, which is not accepted by many third-level colleges.

This year, the second paper in higher level maths was widely criticised by students and teachers because of its difficulty.

The State Examinations Commission (SEC)said it would take account of the feedback to this and all other exams. The results will be dispatched to schools today and made available from 9am tomorrow.

Using their exam PIN number, students can also access their results from the SEC website www.examinations.ie from midday.

Yesterday, however, Minister for Education Mary Hanafin advised students to go to schools to collect their results, rather than going online.

"If you're in the country, the fact that there are people around, principals of the school, maybe the career guidance teacher and other teachers, they will be there to give you advice on where you might turn now so that you're not on your own," she said.

The Irish Times will publish a special 14-page Leaving Cert results supplement tomorrow. The College Helpline will be open from 8am tomorrow at 1800 946 942.
