Winter Olympics: Ireland's Thomas Foley acquitted himself well over the two legs of the men's Alpine skiing giant slalom in Turin today, finishing 31st out of the 82 competitors.

In trying conditions - the race started an hour late to give workers time to clear excess snow from the piste - the Kerry man clocked a time of 1 minute 28.28 seconds in his first run down the Sises piste to lie 35th.

A slower time of 1:29.14 in this afternoon's second run was still enough to move Foley four places up the final standings, his overall time of 2:57.42 some 22 seconds slower than gold medal winner Benjamin Raich.

Raich claimed the gold after first-leg leader Francois Bourque of Canada faltered. Raich, the World Cup champion in the discipline, moved up from fifth place after the first leg with a storming second run.

It was the 27-year-old Raich's first Olympic title and compensation for his disappointment in the combined event last Tuesday when he skied out of the slalom second leg while leading.

Frenchman Joel Chenal, 32, captured his first Olympic medal with silver, just 0.07 seconds behind Raich, and Austrian Hermann Maier added a bronze to the super-G silver he won on Saturday.

American Bode Miller produced a charging second run to move up from 12th after the first leg but could finish only joint sixth. Canadian Bourque finished fourth.
