One food business was prosecuted and another was served with a closure order last month for breaching food safety legislation, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland said.
The Golden Dragon Chinese and Thai restaurant, Market Quay, Bandon, Cork, was prosecuted under food hygiene regulations. The restaurant owner was fined €250 on each of six charges and was ordered to pay costs of €1,000.
Separately, environmental health officers served a closure order on one food business in Dublin, and an improvement order on a grocery shop in Kildare during October.
The closure order was served on Yue Lai Xiang restaurant, 100A Parnell Street, Dublin. An improvement order was served on Fruit 4 U greengrocer, Melitta Road, Kildare.
FSAI chief executive Prof Alan Reilly said food businesses must have an adequate food safety management system in place so that they can assure consumers that the food they are eating has been handled and cooked to the highest standard.
“Most food businesses are committed to high standards for the health of their customers and the good of their business.
“However, we urge food businesses to make sure that there is a food safety management system in place and that it is consulted on a regular basis and updated where necessary. The onus is on each individual food business to ensure that all staff handling and preparing food are up to date on best safety and hygiene practices.
“It is a legal requirement that all staff handling food are supervised and/or trained in food hygiene commensurate with their responsibilities.”
Details of all enforcement notices are published on the FSAI’s website.
