A 17-year-old student footballer was charged yesterday with murdering another player during an amateur league match on Saturday in Newtownards, Co Down. Mr Seamus Seaton, of Norglen Parade, west Belfast, was remanded in custody until November 20th but is to apply for bail in the High Court today.

He was charged with murdering Mr Samuel Reid (25), a solicitor, of Cookstown, Co Tyrone, who died after an alleged assault during the match at Mallusk playing fields.

During a brief hearing at Belfast Magistrates Court, Det Insp James Templeton said it was correct to say the accused had voluntarily surrendered himself to police on Saturday evening and had expressed regret about the incident.

Mr Leo Morrison, defence solicitor, said his client was denying the charge.
