At least 35 people were injured, including two seriously, today in the northern Israeli city of Haifa during a stampede in a football stadium, minutes before the end of a championship game, public radio reported.

The incident occurred at the Kiriat Eliezer stadium, six minutes before the final whistle of the season-ending match between Maccabi Haifa and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Hundreds of Haifa supporters, whose team seemed to have sealed the match by taking a 3-2 lead, poured on to the field, causing a scramble in which 35 people were injured, the report said.

The stadium was later evacuated.
