A former Galway footballer, Carl Donlon (24), yesterday gave £5,000 into court to compensate a player he assaulted during a club match.

Donlon, of Bishop O'Donnell Road, Galway, pleaded guilty at the May sitting of Mountbellew Court to assaulting Mr Seamus Mitchell last October. The case was adjourned for compensation to be paid.

Mr Mitchell was knocked unconscious, and his jaw was broken in two places.

The case was further adjourned to Ballinasloe Court next week.
