London - Mr Alastair Hetherington, a former Guardian editor and controller of BBC Scotland, has died, it was announced today. Mr Hetherington (79), died early yesterday morning in hospital in Stir ling after a long illness.
He edited the Guardian from 1956 to 1975, overseeing its move from Manchester to London, and was widely regarded as its best editor this century. In 1975 he became controller of BBC Scotland, a position he held in the run-up to the first Scottish referendum on devolution.
