A man killed his former lover after he was "spurned in love", it was alleged in the High Court in Belfast yesterday.

Mr Mervyn Emerson (43), of Drumbeg Road, Armagh, is accused of murdering Mrs Hilary Hamilton at her home at Brookside Road, Ballynahinch, last April. The court was told the 36-year-old mother of two was killed by a blast from Mr Emerson's legally-held shotgun, which was stored in the house they had shared until 10 days previously.

Opposing Mr Emerson's bail application, a crown lawyer said police believed he would interfere with witnesses, including Mrs Hamilton's two sons, whose evidence conflicted with his claim that the shooting was accidental.
