Former members of Germany's Red Army Faction (Rote Armee Fraktion) terrorist group have formed a new extreme-left terrorist group, according to federal prosecutors.

New DNA tests show two prominent ex-RAF terrorists were part of a group that escaped with over DM1 million (£400,000) after holding up a cash transporter in Duisberg in 1999. Prosecutors believe the two, Ms Daniela Klette and Mr Ernst Volker Staub, are leaders of the new group, formed less than a year after the RAF disbanded in April 1998.

"We believe the group has access to the logistical structures of the RAF as well as weapon depots and hideouts," said a justice ministry spokesperson.

Over almost three decades, the RAF was responsible for many terrorist acts, including over 30 murders. The group was inspired by leaders Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof, who committed suicide in prison in the 1970s.
