New York - The former New York City mayor, Mr John Lindsay, a charismatic politician who oversaw what was dubbed "Fun City" in the 1960s and early 1970s but was later blamed for its fiscal woes, died on Tuesday night, aged 79, a hospital spokeswoman said yesterday.
Mr Lindsay, who had been in poor health for several years, died at a hospital in Hilton Head, South Carolina, near a retirement home where he lived, the hospital spokeswoman said.
He served as mayor of New York City from 1965 to 1973, a restless era when the city faced racial tensions, urban discontent and debilitating strikes by its transit workers and garbage collectors.
