A former police officer was arrested in the inquiry into bribery of public officials by News Corp’s UK newspapers.
The 57-year-old man was arrested at his home in Surrey, police said yesterday. The unidentified man served in the force’s specialist operations command and retired several years ago. Police have arrested more than 45 people in three investigations into phone hacking, computer hacking and illegal payments by News Corp’s British newspaper unit.
A separate judge-led inquiry has called former police commanders to explain their links with journalists at News Corp’s News of the World tabloid, which was closed last year. The arrest was the result of information provided to police by a News Corp committee, which is investigating possible illegal activity at the company.
