Former Zambian President Frederick Chiluba has been arrested for stealing from the government while in office.
Chiluba has been charged with 59 counts of theft by a public servant at the Lusaka Magistrates Court.
He was released on bail of £180,000.
The arrest came after anti-corruption police officials questioned Chiluba for the second time in a week over allegations he stole millions of pounds from the government while president.
His hand-picked successor, President Levy Mwanawasa, accused him of giving relatives and associates public money funnelled through a London bank account used by Zambia's intelligence service.
Police officials said questioning of Chiluba last week focused on the London bank account.
Chiluba has also been implicated in a corrupt arms deal with Congo involving £12 million in missing state funds. PA
