Former Zambian President Frederick Chiluba has been arrested for stealing from the government while in office.

Former Zambian President Frederick Chiluba has been arrested for stealing from the government while in office.

Chiluba has been charged with 59 counts of theft by a public servant at the Lusaka Magistrates Court.

He was released on bail of £180,000.

The arrest came after anti-corruption police officials questioned Chiluba for the second time in a week over allegations he stole millions of pounds from the government while president.

His hand-picked successor, President Levy Mwanawasa, accused him of giving relatives and associates public money funnelled through a London bank account used by Zambia's intelligence service.

Police officials said questioning of Chiluba last week focused on the London bank account.

Chiluba has also been implicated in a corrupt arms deal with Congo involving £12 million in missing state funds. PA
