Gardaí have ruled out foul play in the death of Mr Timothy Keane (39), whose body was found last Friday at his home on Harold's Cross Road, Dublin.
Mr Keane was the only son of the Chief Justice, Mr Ronan Keane, and socialite and former journalist Ms Terry Keane.
Gardaí said a post-mortem examination had been completed but they were not releasing the results as there was no criminal investigation.
It is understood Mr Keane died from injuries sustained in a fall from a flight of stairs in his apartment, where he lived alone. He was last seen in the locality the previous Monday, and is believed to have lain dead for several days before he was discovered by his landlord.
His mother has flown to Dublin from the south of France, where she now lives, for a private funeral this week.
Mr Justice Keane, who was asked to identify the body on Friday evening, learnt of the death after attending a commemorative event earlier that day for deceased Irish Times editor Mr Douglas Gageby and his late wife, Dorothy.
The Chief Justice is due to retire tomorrow week on his 72nd birthday after serving for 4½ years in the post.
He previously served for six years as a judge of the Supreme Court and for 17 years on the High Court, and acted as president of the Law Reform Commission from 1987 to 1992.
Mr Justice Keane had two other children with his now-estranged wife. They are Madeline, who works for the Sunday Independent, and Justine, who is married to TV presenter and gardener Diarmuid Gavin.
Before her marriage, Ms Terry Keane had a third daughter, Jane, through a separate relationship. She was given up for adoption but has since been reunited with her mother.
Ms Keane, who overcome colon cancer recently, went public in 1999 on a long-standing affair that she had with former Taoiseach Mr Charles Haughey.
Her late son wrote for a time for the Sunday Independent.
Gardaí in Terenure are continuing to investigate Mr Keane's death for the purposes of an inquest. However, they stressed they were now treating it as a "tragic accident", having initially describing it as "suspicious".
Mr Keane's family declined to publish funeral details and have asked that people respect their privacy.
