Four appear in court over attempted robbery

Four Dublin men have appeared at a special sitting of the district court in Portlaoise

Four Dublin men have appeared at a special sitting of the district court in Portlaoise. They were charged with conspiracy to rob the Allied Irish Bank branch in Abbeyleix on Friday.

Three of the accused were also charged with illegally taking possession of cars. The fourth, Gareth Quinn was charged with allowing being a passenger in a stolen car, a Porsche, on Main Street Abbeyleix last Friday.

The four were named as 24-year-old Gareth Quinn of Maplewood Way, in Tallaght, 32-year-old Kevin Lynch of Glenshane Crescent, in Tallaght, 36-year-old John Bishop of St Ronan's Drive in Clondalkin and 20-year-old Ian Quinn with an address at St Aengus Road, Tymon North, in Tallaght.

The accused were remanded in custody to appear in court next Thursday.

The men were arrested by Gardaí in conjunction with members of the Emergency Response Unit, one of whom died of wounds accidentally inflicted by a colleague.

Detective Sergeant John Eiffe, 40, died in hospital and his funeral will take place in Co Meath on Tuesday.
