Four arrested over Meath post office raid

An undisclosed sum of cash was taken from a post office in Bettystown by armed robbers at around 10.30am.

A member of staff was threatened with a gun during the raid but no shots were fired. The men used a Black Audi A6 96-D registered car to make their escape and had set this on fire when gardaí arrested them leaving in another car.

Gardaí said they were still searching the area for the weapon believed to have been used in the raid and the sum of cash taken.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who saw four men in a Black Audi in the area between Bettystown and Laytown/Julienstown or saw any suspicious activity in the area this morning to come forward.

All four men are being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

Two men - aged 20 and 21 respectively - are being held in Drogheda Garda Station while the other two - aged 19 and 32 respectively - are being held in Balbriggan Garda Station.

In a separate incident, gardaí are investigating a raid on post office in Ardfinnan, Co Tipperary.

Three men wearing balaclavas, one armed with a sledgehammer, entered the post office at 10.50am.

It is understood the men threatened the post mistress and demanded the safe be opened. When the safe - which was on a time lock - could not be opened the men took a small quantity of cash from the till.

They made their getaway in a dark coloured Ford Mondeo. No one was injured in the raid.
