Four people from Derry, including three members of one family, have been remanded in custody after appearing before the Magistrates Court charged with the murder of Waterside man, Nigel Murphy.

The four defendants are Gareth William Wray, (26), of no fixed abode, his brother Neville Giles Wray, (29), from Sheskin Gardens, their sister Kirsty Elizabeth McConomy, (33), from Melrose Terrace and a 17 year old who cannot be named for legal reasons.

A detective constable told the court that when he charged the four defendants in the early hours of yesterday morning, all four denied the murder charge.

Nigel Murphy, 42, died after an assault at his home in Clooney Terrace in the Waterside on Saturday evening. The court heard the dead man suffered cuts to his head, injuries to his stomach and to his ribs and upper body.

Forensics experts were today continuing their investigation into the murder as police revealed that some bystanders may have been looking through the window of the house when the incident occurred at around 6pm on Saturday.

Detectives today issued an appeal for these people to get in touch with them at Waterside police station.

All four were remanded in custody until 12 May.
