Four people died on the roads over the weekend, bringing to 235 the number killed on the roads in the Republic this year.

A motorcyclist died when his bike hit a tree at River Valley Road, Swords, north Co Dublin at around 3.40 p.m. on Saturday. He was Mr Ian Kane (22), from River Valley View, Swords.

Also on Saturday, two people were killed in Co Mayo when their car left the road and struck a tree at Sheeaune near Westport about 4 p.m.

They were Mr Damien Grady (19), a building worker from Farnaught, Westport, and Mr Tom O'Malley (20), an apprentice carpenter from Carrowbaun, Westport, who was the driver.

Yesterday, the driver of one of three cars involved in a collision at Masonbrook, Loughrea, Co Galway, on Friday, died in hospital. The 31-year-old woman had yet to be named last night.

In the North, a 29-year-old man was killed on Saturday when the car he was driving hit a tree near Portadown.

Nine people were injured, none seriously, in an accident involving three cars and an ambulance near Drogheda on Saturday.
