Three men were killed in separate road accidents over the weekend, while a fourth died in a fire at his home in Cork.
Early yesterday, Declan Boyce (25), from Kinard, Legan, Co Longford, died when his four-wheel drive vehicle crashed at Ballygarvey Beg, Rathowen, Co Westmeath.
The single-vehicle crash happened at about 3am. A passing motorist alerted the emergency services and Mr Boyce was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar for a postmortem.
On Saturday evening a pedestrian died after he was struck by a car in Swords, Co Dublin.
Bernard Smyth (46) from Rathbeale Road, Swords, was hit by a car on Rathbeale Road at 7.50pm. He was taken to Beaumont Hospital, where he died from his injuries. Gardaí from Swords are investigating.
Earlier on Saturday a man died following a crash in Co Clare. Brendan Moloney (21), from Main Street, Broadford, Co Clare, died after the car he was driving hit a stone wall at Kilmore near Broadford.
He was the sole occupant of the car and no other vehicle was involved. Gardaí from Killaloe are investigating the incident which happened at about 6.55pm.
Meanwhile, a man in his late 60s died when a fire broke out at his home near Cork city centre on Saturday morning.
Neighbours noticed the fire at Roches Buildings, Richmond Hill, at about 9am, and alerted the fire services. Cork fire brigade attended the scene, but the man, who has yet to be named, was pronounced dead at Cork University Hospital a short time later.
A Garda investigation is under way, but the fire is not thought to have been malicious.
