A man has shot dead three people in a Norwegian ski resort and then apparently committed suicide, police have said.

Locals and tourists were told to stay inside in Geilo, a popular Alpine skiing resort in southern Norway, and an overnight train was held up at a nearby station while police hunted for the man, who shot three Norwegians late last night in a home in the town.

The man was found dead nearby apparently after shooting himself early today. Police knew of no motive for the crime.

Murders are extremely rare in Norway. Those shot dead were believed to be a husband and wife and one of their sons. Another man, injured in the shooting, was flown to hospital in Oslo by helicopter.
