Four people have been arrested after a large quantity of counterfeit bank notes was found in a car in Meath.

Four people have been arrested after a large quantity of counterfeit bank notes was found in a car in Meath.

Two men were arrested at the scene when the car they were in was stopped at a Garda check point at Kilmoon on the Slane to Ashbourne road at around 3.15 p.m. yesterday.

Last night, gardai said another man and a woman were later arrested in a follow up operation in the Meath area. All four were taken to Balbriggan Garda station.

Gardai said the money, was mainly £10 and £20 Irish notes.

The Garda Press Office said there was an estimated £100,000 in counterfeit money in the car. The notes were sent for fingerprinting.

All four people were arrested under Section 4 of the Offences Against the State Act. A Garda source said further arrests were expected in what is believed to be an organised operation.

In Killarney two Co Cork men were questioned and later released after being caught passing forged £10 notes yesterday. A Garda spokesman said a quantity of the forged notes was found on them when they were arrested. A file was being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
